Best Resume Formats for 2026

Chronological, functional, or combination? The right format depends on your experience level, career trajectory, and target role. Here's how to choose — with examples of each.

The Three Resume Formats

There are three standard resume formats, each with distinct strengths. Most job seekers should use chronological — but there are valid reasons to choose the others.

87%
of recruiters prefer chronological resumes
7.4 sec
average time a recruiter spends on initial resume scan
68%
of hiring managers now accept two-page resumes

Chronological (Reverse-Chronological)

The chronological resume lists your work experience from most recent to oldest. It's the most widely recognized and preferred format.

Best For
  • ✓ Steady career progression in the same field
  • ✓ No significant employment gaps
  • ✓ Job seekers at any experience level
  • ✓ ATS-heavy application processes
  • ✓ Traditional industries (finance, law, healthcare)
Not Ideal For
  • ✗ Career changers entering a completely new field
  • ✗ Large employment gaps (>2 years)
  • ✗ Frequent job hopping (>5 roles in 5 years)
This Is Your Default
When in doubt, go chronological. It's what 87% of recruiters expect, what ATS systems parse best, and what hiring managers scan most efficiently. Only deviate if you have a specific reason.

Functional (Skills-Based)

The functional resume organizes your experience by skill categories rather than by job. It leads with what you can do rather than where you've done it.

ATS Warning
Functional resumes are the least ATS-friendly format. Many ATS systems struggle to map skills sections correctly because they expect chronological work history. Recruiters also tend to view functional resumes with suspicion, assuming you're hiding gaps. Use this format only for direct networking or when specifically appropriate.

Combination (Hybrid)

The combination resume merges the best of both worlds: a prominent skills section followed by a chronological work history. It highlights capabilities while maintaining the timeline recruiters expect.

Which Format Should You Use?

Use this decision framework:

Staying in Your Field? → Chronological

You have relevant experience and want to show clear growth. This is the right choice for 85%+ of job seekers.

Changing Careers? → Combination

You have transferable skills but your job titles don't match. Lead with relevant skills, then show your work history.

Re-entering the Workforce? → Combination

Highlight what you can do upfront, then address the timeline. Include volunteer work and professional development during your gap.

Only Using Your Network? → Functional

If you're not going through ATS (direct referral, email submission), a functional format can work. But you still need to be ready to discuss your timeline.

ATS & Format Compatibility

Regardless of which format you choose, follow these ATS rules:

  • Always include a work history section with dates — even in functional resumes, add a brief employment timeline. ATS systems flag resumes without dates.
  • Use standard section headers — “Experience” or “Work Experience,” not “Career Highlights” or “Professional Journey.”
  • Keep it simple — single column, no tables, no graphics, standard fonts. All three formats can be made ATS-friendly with proper formatting.
  • Test with a parser — copy your resume text into a plain text editor. If the information is jumbled or out of order, the ATS will have the same problem.

Universal Formatting Tips

Page Length
1 page for 0-10 years experience, 2 pages for 10+ years. Never go beyond 2 pages unless you're in academia or federal government.
Margins
0.5" to 1" on all sides. 0.75" is the sweet spot — enough white space without wasting it.
Font Size
10-12pt for body text, 12-14pt for section headers. Name can be 14-16pt. Never go below 10pt.
File Format
.docx for ATS submissions, text-based PDF when layout matters. Never .pages, .odt, or image-based PDFs.
Consistency
Pick one date format and stick to it. One bullet style. One heading style. Inconsistency looks careless.
White Space
Don't cram content. If your resume feels dense, cut weak bullets rather than shrinking font or margins.
